Can “Jon” Özbal, Ph.D.

Dr. Özbal is responsible for much of the development of the RapidFire High-throughput Mass Spectrometry platform, invented at BioTrove, Inc. where he was Vice President and General Manager of the RapidFire business unit. He led the successful spinout of the RapidFire business to form an independent company, Biocius Life Sciences, in 2009 where he served as the Chief Operating Officer. In 2011 Biocius was acquired by Agilent Technologies and Dr. Özbal become Senior Director, RapidFire Products and the senior manager of the Agilent Wakefield, MA facility. He has extensive experience in bioanalytical chemistry, chromatography, spectroscopy and instrumentation design. Previously, Dr. Özbal was on the faculty of the Division of Bioengineering and Environmental Health (now part of the Department of Biological Engineering) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds an A.B. with honors from Bowdoin College and a Ph.D. in Toxicology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
William A. LaMarr, Ph.D
Vice President, Research & Development
William LaMarr was part of the original team of scientists responsible for the development and commercialization of the RapidFire platform. For the last 10+ years his responsibilities have included managing RapidFire-based contract research services labs, first at BioTrove, then Biocius and most recently at Agilent Technologies. Prior to this, Dr. LaMarr served as Senior Scientist at Microbiotix, Inc. performing drug discovery research on a series of unique and proprietary anti-infective compounds. His background and experience are in the fields of enzymology, toxicology, bioanalytical chemistry and assay design. He holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from Hofstra University and a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Vice President, Product Development
Arrin has worked on the RapidFire platform since inception and for the past 10 years managed the engineering teams responsible for design, development, service and manufacturing of RapidFire instruments and consumables. Most recently he was Senior Engineering Manager at Agilent Technologies where he led the development of the RapidFire 365 instrument and integrated the Service and Manufacturing operations within Agilent resulting in faster response times and improved margins. Prior to Agilent, he was the Vice President of Engineering at Biocius Life Sciences where he was responsible for the design and manufacture of the RapidFire High-Throughput Mass Spectrometry platform. Before joining Biocius he was the Director of Engineering at BioTrove where he served for nine years and contributed to the development of the RapidFire and OpenArray platforms. He holds a B.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto and a MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering.
